ABBEY CHARITABLE TRUST

There are three priority areas aimed at disadvantaged communities: Education and training; Financial advice; and Community regeneration, particularly environmental projects and activities which help bring different groups together.

Funding (of between £500 and £4,000) is for capital items, salaries and sessional worker fees. They prefer to fund a complete element of a project and do not make partial donations to large fundraising appeals.

ANGUS RURAL ENTERPRISE GRANT SCHEME

This is an Angus Council grant scheme to support the development of small rural businesses and community groups. The grant can provide seed corn funding to non-constituted rural groups that have difficulty accessing other established sources of funding. The eligibility and the application criteria is to be reviewed to prevent duplication with other schemes and to align it with the council's new economic development strategy which focuses on the priority areas of sustainable energy, food and drink and tourism.

‘AWARDS FOR ALL’ REVAMP

Awards for All, the popular Lottery small grants programme, has been relaunched in Scotland.

The joint funding scheme between the Big Lottery Fund, sportscotland and the Scottish Arts Council will still be awarding grants of between £500 and £10,000 to local community projects and the application process has been simplified to make it easier for applicants to submit their project ideas. BBC WILDLIFE FUND

Established in May 2007, the BBC Wildlife Fund is a grant-giving charity to support projects that are working to protect endangered wildlife and biodiversity. Initial funds will come from the appeal promoted in the BBC Saving Planet Earth TV series. Money raised will be prioritised for distribution among the projects featured in the programmes. Three year grants will be decided in the autumn. Once the total amount of monies raised from appeals is known, the Fund will invite grant applications from UK charities working internationally and in the UK to protect wildlife.

B&Q ONE PLANET LIVING AWARDS

Awards of up to £10,000 of B&Q products are available to environmental groups, community organisations, schools, charities or sports clubs, etc which are working on projects that aim to enhance the local community or help return to the one planet living. www.workwithus.org.

B & Q ONE PLANET LIVING GRANTS

Community Groups, schools and charitable organisations focussing on:
• Environment/Energy Saving
• Natural Habitats/Wildlife
• Local Culture/Heritage

Project must be local to the store (within a 20-mile radius) and be sustainable. Some groups have also been given smaller donations in kind by their local store.

CAIRNGORMS BIODIVERSITY GRANT SCHEME 2009

The Cairngorms Biodiversity Grant Scheme is continuing for 2009/10. Open to non-profit making constituted groups including schools, community councils, NGOs, charities and trusts grant of between £500 and £5,000 are available. There is a maximum intervention rate of 95% depending on the applicant (organisations receiving core funding from SNH may have a lower intervention rate). The grant funding is for one financial year only (April 2009 – March 2010) and all grant claims must be submitted by March 2010.

The focus of the grant scheme is on community based biodiversity projects (communities can be interpreted as a group of local recorders, a group of farmers, etc.) but survey or research proposals on Cairngorms LBAP priority habitats and species are also included. Grants can be approved within several weeks and there are no deadlines except that most grants are approved by October for completion this financial year.

COMENIUS REGIO

The British Council is launching a new funding programme for local authority linking within Europe in 2009. Comenius Regio partnerships aim to promote the development of structured cooperation between two partner regions across Europe. With clearly defined themes of mutual interest, partnerships must involve the local or regional authority, at least one school and at least one other relevant local partner (youth centres, libraries, fire service etc.).

Funding of up to €40-50K will be available per region for meetings, work shadowing and other activities over a two-year partnership. Contact British Council website at www.britishcouncil.org/comenius-regio-partnerships or e-mail Michael.butterworth@britishcouncil.org.

COMMUNITY FOOD AND HEALTH (SCOTLAND)

Groups can apply for funding to develop activities to improve food access to or take up of a healthy balanced diet with and within low-income communities. In the past funding has been provided for a range of activities, including lunch clubs for older people and community garden projects.

ESMÉE FAIRBAIRN FOUNDATION UPDATED MAIN FUND GUIDANCE NOTES

Esmée Fairbairn Foundation has updated its Main Fund Guidance Notes with the aim of giving clearer advice about their funding. They have also added information to the website about the kind of work they will fund. You can also now apply online to the Main Fund.

FOREST ENTERPRISE INITIATIVE

The FEI Partnership Fund will specifically support the work of FEI clusters; it provides match funding for specific activities which enhance the overall objectives of FEI. These are to help develop, among young people, a greater understanding of trees, woodlands, forest management, forest products and wood as a sustainable resource. Funds from £200 up to £5,000. GANNOCHY TRUST

Preference is given to organisations in Perth or its environs. Submissions are necessary on two sides of A4. There is no website. HEALTHY COMMUNITIES NEED HEALTHY PLACES AND NATURAL SPACE

The Scottish Executive has announced a new funding package worth £250,000 to encourage more volunteers to get involved in environmental projects. The initiative will play a vital part in maintaining and developing physical and mental wellbeing for people and will help to achieve the goals of the Scottish Biodiversity Strategy.

The additional funding will be available to help volunteer managers ensure that more people can take the opportunity to volunteer and enjoy and enhance their community’s natural environment. Further details from:

HERITAGE LOTTERY FUND - PARKS FOR PEOPLE PROGRAMME

The Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) has re-launched the Parks for People Programme for projects involving urban or rural green spaces designed for informal recreation and enjoyment. This can include parks, public gardens as well as squares, walks and promenades, etc. Priority will be given to projects that the community value as part of their heritage; meets local social, economic and environmental needs; and actively involves local people.

Between 2009 and 2013, £20 million a year will be available. Local Authorities as well as other not for profit organisations that own public parks and gardens can apply for grants of between £250,000 and £5 million. First round deadline is 31st August. LEARNING LAUNCHPAD

This is a new fund to support young people aged 14-25 who have an innovative idea that will enable them to be successful outside the confines of academia. The fund is open to individuals, groups or early-stage organisations regardless of whether they are charities, social enterprises or for-profit organisations. The fund will support projects designed by young people that will both develop themselves and encourage social change within disadvantaged communities.

Initial support can be for up to £30,000, followed by stage-two opportunities up to £100,000. The closing date has passed, but there will be further opportunities in the future. Check: http://www.learninglaunchpad.org/.

LIFE PLUS (UK)

The European Commission has announced that the third call for proposals under the Life + Programme is now open for applications. The Life + programme is the EU’s main fund for supporting environmental projects. Under this call for proposals, the Commission will be supporting projects under the following headings:

• nature and biodiversity;
• environment policy and governance;
• information and communication.

A total of €250 Million is available for this call and the total available to the UK is in excess of €19 million. Project proposals should be sent to the relevant national authority no later than 15 September 2009. Thereafter, national authorities will send project proposals on to the European Commission by 22nd October 2009.

The European Commission has also scheduled workshops for potential LIFE+ applicants in each EU member state. Within the UK the workshop will be held on the 26th June at the Park Crescent Conference Centre, London. Interested organisations should contact Joanna Pachucka at lifeplus-uk@stellaconsulting.com.

Previously supported projects include:

• Groundwork Sheffield which received funding to address climate change by increasing the quality of green roofs. Measures foreseen include the establishment of a UK Green Roof Code of Best Practice and the encouragement of its adoption through a Green Roof Innovation Awards scheme.
• The Energy Saving Trust Limited to help to raise consumer awareness on energy and water saving issues. Domestic water saving advice will be combined with domestic sustainable energy saving messages (on energy efficiency, renewable and road transport). Actions will include local awareness raising campaigns, using the Energy Saving Trust’s UK Sustainable Energy Network advice infrastructure.
• Business Solutions Europa Limited which received funding to produce and promote animated cartoons to help European children learn more about the environment, sustainability and climate change:

MARINE STEWARDSHIP – MARINE COMMUNITIES FUND

PAUL HAMLYN FOUNDATION

The Foundation is currently accepting applications under its Education and Learning programme. In particular, the Foundation is looking to fund projects that promote innovation and change in the areas of supplementary schooling and tackling school exclusion and truancy. Eligible organisations that can apply for funding include:

- Charities
- Local authorities individual pre-schools
- Schools
- Out-of-school clubs
- Supplementary schools
- Colleges
- Youth clubs - if they demonstrate benefits to the wider community and include partnership working that will result in increasing access to education and learning to all communities and age groups.

The costs that can be covered by the Foundation's grants include running costs such as staff salaries and overheads such as stationery, rent, rates and utilities. The average size grant awarded in 2005/06 was £19,300.

PROMOTE WALKING (SCOTLAND)

The Paths for All Partnership funds new and innovative ways of promoting walking for health. Funding is available to any organisation, group or partnership within Scotland which can demonstrate that it is working in the interests of the wider community. Applications should demonstrate the involvement of the local community in planning and running local projects. The development of volunteers within the community to help run the scheme is integral to achieving long-term sustainability of led walk programmes.

Grants of up to £2,000 are available with no specific deadline. There is also a large grants scheme of between £2,000 and £40,000 for projects lasting up to three years – the deadline is 5 October 2009. Further details: www.pathsforall.org.uk/pathstohealth/grants.asp.

REGIONAL EVENTS PROGRAMME (SCOTLAND)
EventScotland's Regional Event Programme is now accepting funding applications for sporting and cultural events. The Regional Events Programme is designed to showcase specific towns and regions across the country. Whilst the majority of international events are likely to take place in the larger cities of Edinburgh and Glasgow, the regional programme has been created to support the development of cultural and sporting events held outside of these cities. This is a development programme, not a traditional grants programme providing long-term or core funding. It is designed to support additional elements or new activity specifically designed to help the event grow. The level of funding available per event is between £2,000 and £25,000.

ST MODWEN ENVIRONMENTAL TRUST UK
St. Modwen Properties PLC, which is one of the UK’s largest regeneration company’s, has launched a new environmental fund to support communities in which the company is active. The Funding will be available through two grant making streams. These are larger project grants of over £10,000 and small projects grants of less than £10,000.
The funding is available to not-for-profit organisations, such as community groups and charities. The Trust will generally not fund local authorities, profit making organisations or private clubs, but may fund projects from the public sector e.g. schools, where mainstream funding is not available. The Fund will make grants only for projects which are within 10 miles of a landfill site. Applications can be made at any time. Details: http://www.stmodwenenvironmentaltrust.co.uk/index.html.
SCOTTISH COMMUNITY FOUNDATION

SCF is currently the 4th largest exclusively Scottish grant giver, after Lloyds TSB Foundation, Children in Need and The Robertson Trust. In 2008 it distributed £700,000 through its Small Grants scheme which accepts applications for £5,000 and under. SCF is one of the few funders that accepts applications from groups that are not registered charities.

SCOTTISH COMMUNITY FOUNDATION AWARDS

Express Grants are available to community groups looking for funding of up to £2,000. The scheme has a straightforward application process, and a short turnaround time. Applications can be made at any time – www.workwithus.org.

SCOTTISH RURAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME – RURAL PRIORITIES

The timetable for further Rural Priorities applications in 2009 has been made available. £10 million will be made available in 2009 for capital investment across all elements of Rural Priorities, through an August funding round to aid Scotland's economic recovery. This will give rural business, both large and small, the chance to kick-start projects that will create sustainable rural communities. There will be a further three rounds in each following year. SECRET MILLIONAIRE FUND

It is now possible to propose a community project or organisation you think would benefit from Big Lottery funding. Or, if you have an idea for a project that can bring real improvements to the lives of communities, and can pass a simple eligibility test, you can apply to Secret Millionaire Fund yourself. In both cases Lottery grants are awarded following an application and assessment process which takes up to 8 weeks.
Applications are welcomed from voluntary and community groups, schools, community councils, local authorities and health boards. Grants of between £300 and £10,000 are available and projects must be completed within one year.

SUPERGROUNDS FOR SCHOOLS

Supergrounds is a £6 million community investment programme, funded by the Royal Bank of Scotland group and delivered through Learning through Landscape, to help primary schools improve their school grounds. Over six years, 900 primary schools from around the UK will have the opportunity to transform their existing school grounds into attractive and stimulating places where children can learn and play in safety. Schools cannot apply directly but must be nominated by a Royal Bank of Scotland group employee.

Schools that win an award will receive a package of support worth £7,000 including: a cash award of £4,000; 4 days of a project advisor's time; a project guide & membership to the Supergrounds Learning Network; 'Create your Playground' Teaching Resource.

SUPPORT FOR SCHOOLS TO BECOME ECO FRIENDLY

Schools, together with their pupils that wish to make a positive contribution to the environment, can register to become an Eco School. Once registered as an Eco School, schools will be part of an international group of schools working towards education for sustainable development and a better quality of life for local and global communities. They will be eligible to apply for funding to help them progress through the programme.

The Eco Schools programme operates throughout the UK. However the funding and other support available to schools to implement eco-friendly activities varies. Funding for Eco-Schools is currently available through the 'Switched on Communities' grant scheme. Grants of up to £5,000 can be awarded to schools, including a range of energy-saving white goods. Priority will be given to projects that clearly demonstrate an energy efficiency element or identify technology solutions to environmental improvements. Applications can be made at any time.

TESCO CHARITY TRUST

The sum of £360,000 is available each year to local and national charities throughout the UK in areas with a Tesco store. Awards are between £1,500 and £5,000 and given as one-off contributions through the Community Awards Scheme.

Organisations must submit brief details of the proposed project before the closing date. If the criteria fit the project, application forms are posted in July and a decision made known by November.

THE BROMLEY TRUST

Conservation and sustainability of flora and fauna; environment for wildlife and mankind. Must be a charity which promotes sustainability and helps to develop responsible knowledge of and use of the worlds resources.

THE CONSERVATION FOUNDATION

Local groups and individuals may apply. The Foundation helps provide funding for projects designed to improve local environments throughout the UK – for instance turning derelict land into an amenity park or wildlife area, tree planting, creating a wildlife pond, renovating neglected river and canal footpaths, providing water butts and recycling facilities in village halls. THE CO-OPERATIVE FOUNDATION

The scheme is to support community and voluntary sector activity through giving grants to local groups and organisations across its trading area. Grants from £500 to £30,000 are available for part or total funding for one-year projects.

THE GARFIELD WESTON FOUNDATION

UK-wide Education initiatives involving the arts, health, environment, community, youth, religion or welfare. Must be registered charity able to supply annual report and audited accounts.

Small grants scheme up to £5,000; larger scheme between £2,000 and £500,000. Further information from: www.garfieldweston.org.

THE JOANIES TRUST UK
Registered charities working with young people aged 11 to 25 are eligible to apply for grants through the Joanies Trust. Each year, the Trust makes approximately 30 grants with an average value of £1,000 to support projects that offer intensive support to young people as well as those that promote preventative work, and especially those that are designed to lead to individual development through integration, work opportunities or accreditation. In particular the Trust is looking to support projects that show innovation and imagination as well as evidence of close consultation with young people in developing their project. THE NATURESAVE TRUST

The scope of projects funded is broad - the trust will fund projects that deal with the root of a specific environmental and/or conservationist problem and those that encourage the greater commercial adoption of sustainable development.

Businesses, schools and charities are eligible to apply. Previously funded projects include:

• Helping a school to create and maintain sustainable organic vegetables in the school grounds, and to help the school link the garden to the curriculum through a teaching resource;
• Training young people in rural crafts, ensuring these environmental skills are retained.

THE PETER DE HAAN CHARITABLE TRUST

Grants are available for social welfare, the environment and the arts. The Trust's arts programme focuses on projects and organisations which:
- are partnership-based with young people as the protagonists of the creative process;
- have an emphasis on community cohesion and under-represented groups;
- support confidence-building, collaboration and the incubation of ideas amongst young people;
- are innovative, wide-reaching and based on tangible outcomes.

The Trust will gradually spend all of its endowment over the next few years until 2020. The trustees will consider funding up for to a maximum of three years and grants may be for project-based applications or to subsidise core costs.

THE WAKEHAM TRUST

Small grants of up to £750 are available to small registered charities for a wide range of charitable activities. It is particularly interested in neighbourhood projects, community arts projects, projects involving community service by young people, or projects set up by those who are socially excluded. It also supports innovative projects to promote excellence in teaching (at any level, from primary schools to universities).

The Trust funds registered charities only - although if you are not a registered charity, you may still be able to get a grant from the Trust if you can find a registered charity in your area willing to hold the grant for you. The Trust prefers small charities with no paid staff.

THE WATERWAYS TRUST SMALL GRANTS SCHEME

The scheme is open to organisations, community groups or schools - community based projects to improve facilities on canals and inland waterways.

The project must be waterway related (canal or river) and meet at least one of the following objectives (preference will be given to projects that address more than one objective):
• Provide lasting environmental enhancement
• Encourage public enjoyment and awareness of the waterways
• Actively involve and benefit the community
• Improve educational opportunity and interpretation of the waterway
• Benefit young people

TREES FOR COMMUNITIES/TREES FOR SCHOOLS

Funds (between £100 and £700) are available for schools and community groups to be actively involved in tree planting projects. Successful applicants will receive up to 75% towards their planting costs. Go to www.treecouncil.org.uk/?q=grants to download an application form.

UK VILLAGES COMMUNITY KITTY

This grant covers a broad spectrum of community activities including nature reserves and playing fields. It is essential to register on the UK Villages Website: UKVillages.co.uk. Between £50 and £300 is available.
