Geodiversity in Tayside

Tayside Geodiversity, as a voluntary group, has closed but its information within the Tayside Biodiversity website will be retained.

Much work has been undertaken by the group to review and assess the list of Local Geodiversity Sites, originally known as Regionally Important Geological Sites (RIGS).  Many of these places can be important for educational purposes, scientific study, historical value, and for public awareness and appreciation of landscape and geology. All the information has been passed to the appropriate local authority planning departments and when publicly available, we will feature them on the website.

Since Tayside Geodiversity was set up (over 15 years ago), the Scottish Geology Trust has been formed and is now very much the national face of geology. The Trust’s goal is to inspire people everywhere to understand, love and care for Scotland’s amazing geological heritage. It also runs a country-wide Geology Festival every year. Please explore its excellent website to find out more – Scottish Geology Trust – Celebrating Scotland’s unique geology.

In the meantime the Tayside Geodiversity Action Plan will be active until 2026 and is available on these pages. If you would like to report any relevant actions being undertaken or achieved within Tayside please contact caglloyd@pkc.gov.uk. This geodiversity section will also remain open and will be updated occasionally.
